Slav Hermanowicz has been at the University of California at Berkeley since 1983 where he has conducted research and teaching in the area of environmental protection with special emphasis on physical sustainability, water and wastewater treatment and water reuse. The focus of his research was on metrics of sustainability, biological processes, membrane bioreactors, and biostability of drinking water. He consulted for public and private clients including water utilities, engineering companies, attorneys, governmental and supranational organizations in the US, EU and Asia. His visiting appointments include Nishihara Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Hokkaido University, Japan, Gaspar de Portola Scholar at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Universitat de Girona, Spain. Recently, he was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Sustainability at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna (Fall 2008). He graduated from Warsaw University of Technology and the University of Toronto.

Pascual Benito, Ph.D.
Northgate Environmental Management, Inc.
| |
Dr. Pascual Benito is a senior staff engineer at Northgate Environmental Management. He has 14 years of experience in environmental site investigations and working in research and development in areas including surface and subsurface hydrology, contaminant transport modeling, environmental restoration, and the use of geographic information systems for environmental data analysis. Dr. Benito is an expert in fluid flow and contaminant transport modeling and has carried out regional and watershed scale investigations to assess the risks posed by industrial waste discharges. He also has extensive experience in developing and deploying web-based environmental information systems for use in multi-stakeholder projects for government agencies and private corporations. Dr. Benito earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering from U.C. Berkeley, and his undergraduate degree in Geology from Amherst College. Prior to joining Northgate, he worked for WebH2O, LLC, developing web-based environmental management systems, and in the Earth Sciences Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Steve McDonald, P.E.
Partner
Carollo Engineers |
| |
Mr. McDonald is a partner and Director of the Integrated Water Resources (IWR) Group for Carollo Engineers. The IWR Group applies engineering, science and business principles to deliver a wide range of planning services for municipal wastewater, stormwater and water resource agencies. Mr. McDonald has significant experience in the development of strategic master plans for the water quality industry. He has master-planned over $8 billion of new wastewater treatment facilities in the last 10 years. He is the creator of customized software models used in strategic master planning and forecasting, including: the Master Plan Manager (MPMTM) for developing and running strategic planning scenarios; OptimoTM for minimizing O&M costs; and the Water/Wastewater Asset Manager (WAMTM) for assessing asset condition, criticality, and vulnerability, and for comparing and prioritizing projects based on risk and benefit. These planning models incorporate principles of sustainability and “green” technologies with the latest in wastewater/stormwater treatment processes. He has completed master plans for the City and County of San Francisco; the City of Fresno, CA; the Cities of Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County, NV; Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District, CA; and is currently project director for the development of the Wastewater Master Plan for the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant, and the land use plan for the surrounding 2,600 acres. Mr. McDonald has contributed as a technical expert in USEPA’s development of the total maximum daily load (TMDL) approach to improving water quality. He was appointed to the National Research Council (NRC) Committee to assess the science of the TMDL approach and to make recommendations to EPA and Congress on the future direction of TMDL water quality regulations. He is coauthor of the NRC Report; “Assessing the TMDL Approach to Water Quality Management,” (June 2001).
